ALF Home Care Instructions

Welcome to Your ALF Journey

The Advanced Lightwire Functional (ALF) appliance is designed to work gently with your body's natural growth, development, and healing processes. As your mouth, muscles, and nervous system adapt, you may notice subtle changes throughout treatment. This is a gradual process, and patience is an important part of achieving long-lasting results.

What to Expect

It is normal to experience:

  • Mild pressure or awareness of the appliance during the first few days

  • Temporary changes in speech

  • Increased saliva production

  • Mild tongue soreness as the tongue adapts to its new resting position

  • Occasional tenderness after adjustments

Most patients adjust within several days to one week.

Eating with Your ALF

For the first few days after placement or adjustment:

  • Choose softer foods as needed

  • Take smaller bites

  • Chew slowly and mindfully

As you adapt, we encourage a varied diet that includes appropriate chewing opportunities to help support healthy jaw development and function.

Please avoid:

  • Sticky candies

  • Gum

  • Caramel

  • Taffy

  • Hard candies

  • Ice chewing

These foods may loosen or damage the appliance.

Cleaning Your ALF

Good oral hygiene is essential.

We recommend:

  • Brushing after meals whenever possible

  • Carefully brushing with a tuft toothbrush around the wire and composite buttons

  • Using a Waterpik®

  • Continuing regular dental cleanings

Take your time when cleaning around the appliance to prevent plaque accumulation.

Tongue Awareness

One of the goals of ALF therapy is to encourage healthy tongue posture.

Whenever possible:

  • Rest your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth

  • Keep lips comfortably closed

  • Breathe through your nose

Do not force your tongue into position. With time and proper development, this posture often becomes more natural and comfortable.

Supporting Your Results

ALF therapy works best when combined with healthy habits.

Depending on your treatment plan, we may recommend:

  • Myofunctional therapy

  • Nasal breathing exercises

  • Buteyko breathing techniques

  • Osteopathic care

  • Bodywork

  • Functional movement therapies

These supportive therapies help promote balance throughout the body and may enhance treatment outcomes.

If Something Feels Different

Please contact our office if:

  • The appliance feels loose

  • A wire becomes bent

  • A composite button falls off

  • You experience persistent discomfort

  • You develop a sore that does not improve

  • The appliance breaks

Please do not attempt to adjust the appliance yourself.

A Gentle Reminder

ALF treatment is different from traditional orthodontics. Rather than forcing rapid change, it works gradually with the body to support function, balance, breathing, and development.

Every patient progresses at a unique pace. Trust the process, stay consistent with your recommendations, and communicate with us whenever questions arise.

We are honored to be part of your journey toward improved oral health, breathing, and overall well-being.
