ALF Approach

What Is ALF?

The Advanced Lightwire Functional (ALF) appliance, developed by Dr. Darick Nordstrom, is a gentle, whole-body approach to oral and craniofacial development. Unlike traditional orthodontic appliances that rely primarily on mechanical force, the ALF works with the body's natural growth and adaptive processes to support balanced development of the dental arches, jaws, airway, and surrounding structures.

A non-reactive Elgiloy wire precisely custom-fitted to feel comfortable behind the teeth, the ALF is lightweight, discreet, and nearly invisible during everyday life. Its flexible design provides subtle, continuous stimulation that encourages natural bone growth, healthy muscle function, improved airway development, and overall structural balance.

By supporting the connection between the mouth, face, airway, posture, and nervous system, ALF therapy may benefit both children and adults experiencing concerns related to breathing, sleep, jaw development, TMJ discomfort, and overall function.

The appliance is worn full-time and carefully adjusted during regular visits, allowing treatment to progress gradually and comfortably while respecting each patient's unique developmental needs.

Rather than forcing teeth into predetermined positions, the ALF uses gentle, continuous stimulation to encourage the body's natural growth and adaptive processes. This allows the dental arches, jaws, and surrounding structures to develop in a more balanced and functional way over time.

The Core Pillars of Our Approach

How does ALF Therapy Work?

Prioritizing the Tongue

The tongue plays a critical role in facial development, breathing, airway health, and nervous system regulation. While many traditional expanders can limit tongue space, the ALF is designed to support it. By encouraging the tongue to rest naturally against the roof of the mouth, the ALF helps promote healthy arch development, nasal breathing, and airway stability.

Supporting the Nervous System

The ALF's light, continuous forces provide gentle sensory input that can help support nervous system regulation and overall function. Many families appreciate this whole-body approach, particularly when working with children who experience sensory sensitivities, ADHD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Respecting Individual Development

Every patient develops at their own pace. Changes in the dental arches, facial structure, breathing patterns, and overall function occur gradually and uniquely for each individual. Treatment is carefully guided and adjusted over time to support lasting, stable, and functional results.

"The goal is not simply straighter teeth, but improved function, balance, breathing, and overall wellness."
